Jan 05, 2012 (newstodate): Poland's Warsaw Chopin Airport is to promote is role as a transfer hub through shorter transfer times.
Transit passengers currently account for some 10 percent of the airport's total volume, but new reduced transfer times for LOT traffic may drive the transit segment to about 20 percent this year already.
Effective from March 25, 2012, LOT will introduce 30 minutes as new Minimum Connecting Time on short- and medium-haul routes for arrivals from Schengen destinations, and 35 minutes from non-Schengen destinations.
This step is part of the carrier and the airports plan to establish a transfer hub in Warsaw.
For long-haul routes and flights from Yerevan and Tel Aviv, the MCT will be 40 minutes.
The new MCT is one result from the opening of two new piers in August 2011, increasing the number of aircraft contact stands and gates, but allowing the airport to do away with security screening of transit passengers travelling between Schengen countries.
In 2011, the airport served over 9.3 million passengers, which equals nearly 42 percent of Poland's total passenger traffic.
