Jan 06, 2012 (newstodate): Moldova's Marculesti International Airport will be modernized and upgraded by a series of phased projects during 2012-2022.
In the first phase, 2012-14, the airport that is currently certified for daylight operations only will have new airnav systems to allow for night and bad weather operations, and the 2,512m runway will be renovated.
The airport has been a military air force base since 1957, but obtained the status as a commercial airport in 2004.
In 2008 the airport was made the center of a new free economic zone where resident companies may provide airport services and transport goods by airfreight, sell products wholesale, manufacture industrial products for export, process agricultural products, pack and label goods etc.
