Jan 30, 2012 (newstodate): Looking for steep cargo growth in 2012, Iraqi Kurdistan's Erbil Airport easily catches the eye.
Cargo volumes at the airport were up no less than 67 percent, y-o-y, in 2011, to a total of 17,769 tonnes.
The airport now plans for about 38 cargo operations per month in 2012, but does not expect to be able to grow at the same high note in 2012.
The growth in cargo has mainly been driven by the fast development in Iraqi Kurdistan's region, with Emirates, Etihad, and Maximus serving routes into Erbil with dedicated cargo freighters.
The cargo volumes are vastly dominated by import, with export accounting for less than 1,000 tonnes in 2011.
