Jan 27, 2012 (newstodate): 2011 was a record year in cargo volumes at Hungary's Budapest Ferihegy Airport.
For the first time ever, total cargo volumes exceeded 100,000 tonnes.
Flown air cargo volumes grew by 6.4 percent, y-o-y, to almost 70,000 tonnes, despite the flat volumes worldwide last year, while trucked volumes more than doubled to nearly 37,000 tonnes, taking total cargo throughput to 106,595 tonnes.
The airport's performance in cargo volumes are even more impressive as 2010 already saw substantial increases with flown air cargo up by 20 percent and trucked volumes once again doubling.
The expansion in traffic volumes in 2011 came from a number of airline customers, with Turkish Airlines starting a weekly freighter service between Budapest and Istanbul, and Cargolux also increasing its cargo capacity, including the introduction of its new-generation B747-8 freighter to its Budapest services.
American Airlines and Qatar Airways also launched passenger flights to Budapest last year, adding significant belly load cargo capacities.
