Jan 27, 2012 (newstodate): Nagorno-Karabagh's disputed Stepanakert Airport will be ready to accept commercial aircraft within two months.
French and Dutch aviation specialists have conducted an audit of the airport and certified its infrastructure, opening the road for launch of commercial operations.
Stepanakert Airport, in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region, under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies, has been inoperative for 20 years, but plans are to reopen it with flights from Yerevan, Armenia.
The process has, however, been delayed repeatedly both due to technical issues and, not least, political problems between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Thus Azerbaijan has even threatened to shoot down aircraft operating into or from the airport.
