Jan 04, 2012 (newstodate): Estonia's Tallinn Airport ended the year 2011 with a sound recovery in its airfreight volumes.
A total of 18,371 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport, a growth by 53.6 percent, y-o-y.
The result was primarily due to the return of cargo imports that were up 66.6 percent, y-o-y, to 15,456 tonnes in 2011.
This traffic is primarily driven by ex-China imports destined for the Russian market and transferred from air to truck transportation at the airport.
Cargo exports were almost unchanged against 2010, generating 1,709 tonnes only through the year.
Mail volumes handled were 1,207 tonnes including 569 tones of export mail, up 26.7 percent, and 638 tonnes of export mail, up 18.5 percent, y-o-y.
Tallinn Airport is, however, still far from the pre-crisis peak level in cargo volumes totaling 41,867 tonnes in 2008.
