Sep 06, 2011 (newstodate): Ukraine has high hopes for the US CAA to upgrade its airports to Category 1 early in 2012.
With the Cat 1 certification, Ukrainean carrier would again be allowed to launch flights on new routes into US airport.
The FAA will reportedly complete its technical audit of the country's airport, and based on this chances are that Ukraine will be finally upgraded in 2012.
Currently, only Aerosvit is allowed to continue serving its route between Kiev and New York while the existing bi-lateral air services agreement allows for four designated carriers from each side to perform 18 weekly rotations.
High on the list of Aerosvit is the opening of at least one more US destination, Chicago that has a large population of ethnic Ukrainians.
Plans by Aerosvit to launch flights to Chicago were actually being prepared with start by April 2006, but stalled due to the downgrading by FAA in 2005 for lack of adherence to ICAO's airport and flight safety requirements.
