Sep 16, 2011 (newstodate): The situation in the market for ground handling at Finland's Helsinki Vantaaa Airport may be changing again, with a strong newcomer to make its entrance.
If current negotiations end successfully, the Swiss handling provider Swissport will set up Helsinki Vantaa Airport as a new base, with Finnair as its launch customer.
Finnair's plans are to contract Swissport to provide baggage and apron handling of its flights to Swissport, replacing the contract since December 1, 2009, with the Finnish provider Barona Handling.
Plans are to conclude the negotiations before the end of this year, with Swissport setting up Helsinki as a new base of operations in the Nordic region.
The cooperation with Swissport will concern only traffic at Helsinki Vaanta Airport, with Finnair retaining its current handling contracts elsewhere in the country's airports.
Developing its partnership network is part of Finnair's strategy of structural change that aims to significantly lower its cost base and improve quality to support its growth. Finnair's goal is to grow its Asian traffic from 74 weekly flights to 140 and double its Asian traffic revenue by 2020.
Swissport will not, however, be restricted to handling Finnair's flights, but will also aim at attracting other airline customers at the airport.
This will again put pressure on other handling providers at the airport, notably the Latvian ground handling services operator North Hub Services that set up operations at Helsinki Vantaa Airport from July 1, 2010, with airBaltic, City Airline, Sun Express and Primera Air among its customers.
