Sep 15, 2011 (newstodate): The project for setting up a new cargo service, Arctic Cargo Airlines at Sweden's Luleaa Kallax Airport is still on the table.
-Actually, all details in our business plan have now been settled by the participants in the project that include several experienced aviation professionals, says Lars Hedemalm, one of the driving forces behind the project.
-What we need now is to obtain the financial background to launch the project. We have contracted a consultant with experience in the salmon logistics market and a network in the financial circles to work on potentials investors, and this process is starting this month.
-Once the financial issues have been settled, the first freighter service by Arctic Cargo Airlines would be in the air within 270 days of final preparations. We have already now firm commitments from Norwegian exporters for at least 40 tonnes of shipments per week.
-The planned service from Luleaa Kallax Airport to destinations in China and other Asian destinations would open up an entirely new market for salmon producers in Norway's northern region that are now without access to the Asian markets due to long transportation times into existing services from continental airports.
-What is actually exported from the region now is passing within few kilometers from Luleaa Kallax Airport as the road infrastructure of Norway necessitates the detour via the Swedish highway system, eating shelf time of the perishable commodity.
-The project is of course very demanding as we have to secure commitments from the exporters on one hand, and contract an airline operator on the other, while securing the financing of the project in times of financial distress in the markets, says Mr Hedemalm.
