Sep 20, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for developing Finland's Vaasa Airport into a new cargo hub are now moving ahead.
-It is alarming for air cargo operations that the Vaasa Airport is currently lacking air cargo handling services, making it impossible to transport goods in passenger planes cargo holds, says Riitta Bjorkenheim, Development Manager (flight logistics).
-During this autumn, a report will be made with the goal to map out suppliers, expeditors and air cargo companies and to study their interest for developing these operations both operationally and commercially. Another aim is to find out which company could be able to begin cargo handling operations at Vaasa Airport, says Ms Bjorkenheim.
In the meantime, plans for the Vaasa Airport Logistics Center terminal are proceeding as scheduled, and the interiors of the terminal are currently being planned together with potential end users, with Vaasa Region Development Company VASEK and Vaasa Parks Ltd. as project developers.
The aim is to start excavation work later this autumn, and the construction of the terminal in 2012.
Construction of the air cargo apron is waiting for a positive financing decision from the Ministry of Transport and Communications' supplementary budget.
The application from Vaasa Airport was transmitted in June 2009, and the project has also been approved by EU for state financing.
The Vaasa region is home to EnergyVaasa, the leading Nordic concentration of energy technology companies. Other participating companies including notably Vacon, Wrtsil and ABB use air cargo to a considerable extent for their transportation needs.
DHL Express operates flights with an AN-26 from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia, and with a Boeing 737 to St Petersburg, both connecting to the ex-Helsinki flight to Leipzig.
