Sep 13, 2011 (newstodate): The Latvian airport handling company North Hub Services has quietly withdrawn its handling equipment from Estonia's Tallinn Airport, leaving its Estonian company dormant.
At the same time, airBaltic that has so far provided its own handling at Tallinn Airport using the NHS equipment and staff, is now turning to the airport's only handling company, Tallinn Airport Ground Handling.
-Strategically, this does not indicate any change on our side, says Janis Balkens NHS CEO.
-But as airBaltic winds down its frequency of flights at Tallinn Airport, it does not really make sense to maintain costly equipment and staff there to serve down to some four rotations during the coming winter schedule.
-Instead we have moved these assets back from Estonia, waiting for Tallinn Airport to reach the two million passengers-mark presumably in 2012. When that happens we will be back and certainly open up for business in Tallinn that we consider a natural market for us.
-So far we have opened one new handling base per year, now serving airline clients in Riga, Helsinki, and Stockholm. We are currently evaluating two potential new sites closely, and a new station will be announced before the end of this year, says Mr Balkens.
One of these may probably be Gothenburg Landvetter Airport that was already on the list in connection with the opening in April 2011 of operations at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
