Sep 05, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for the reopening of Serbia's Uzice-Ponikve Airport have gained fresh momentum after a recent donors conference.
The EU Commission has pledged to lend financing to a new master plan for the project by 2012, and both the USA and China have announced their intentions to support the project to build new infrastructure allowing the airport to reopen.
Originally a military base, Uzice-Ponikve Airport served as a domestic airport during the 90'ies before being destroyed at the end of decade during the civil wars in the region.
The project has long been on the agenda but failed to realize due to lack of financial means.
Uzice-Ponikve Airport has a 3,200m runway and may see a future as a charter airport and also attract cargo business due to its industrial catchment area.
