Sep 22, 2011 (newstodate): Bulgaria is to see the opening of Balchik Airport in summer 2012, already.
Construction works at the former Bulgarian Air Force base on the coast of the Black Sea will start on October 8, 2011, and the official date of opening for commercial traffic has been slated for May 1, 2012.
The de-commissioned AFB will become Bulgaria's third Black Sea airport, alongside the airport of Varna and Bourgas.
The airport has one 2,500m runway that may be extended to 3,500m as traffic grows.
The construction works will be funded and managed by Bulgaria's Sofia International Airport, thus avoiding problems with EU over direct state financial involvement.
