Sep 23, 2011 (newstodate): Sharing ownership by Eignarhaldsfelagid Fengur hf, an Icelandic based travel group owned by Palmi Haraldsson, both Iceland Express and the UK-based ACMI provider Astraeus Airlines have axed their CEOs.
Thus Iceland Express has called in its former CEO in 2004-2006, Birgir Jonssson to replace out-going CEO Matthias Imsland from October 17, 2011, while Mario Fulgoni, Astraeus Airline CEO, has also been axed and temporarily replaced by Skarphedinn Steinarsson, chairman of both Astreus Airlines and Iceland Express.
-There have been serious service problems at Iceland Express with long delays and cancellations which are mainly due to operational problems at Astreus, the capacity provider of Iceland Express, says an Icelandic source close to the industry.
-After a long series of negative press reporting, recently culminating with complaints by a group that lost 200,000 Icelandic kroner after seeing their Iceland Express flight to Boston canceled, Matthias Imsland reached the end of the rope.
-The trans-Atlantic flights may also have proved unprofitable to Iceland Express, now also facing increased competition by Icelandair that is expanding its services to North American destinations, further threatening the position of Iceland Express, he says.
