Sep 22, 2011 (newstodate): The new CEO of Iceland Express will take office on October 19, 2011.
Replacing the current CEO Matthias Imsland in the office, Birgir Johnsson will thus return to the seat that he held also during the period 2004-2006 after a previous time as the carrier's marketing manager.
It remains to be seen if the replacements augurs a change in strategy, and if so in which directions.
Asked about this, the carrier's PR officer comments: "The new CEO says so!", while offering no further comments at this stage.
Well-informed industry sources in Iceland claim that Iceland Express has plans to double the size of the company over the next three years.
After providing a growing network of intra-European flights, Iceland Express added trans-Atlantic operations from this summer, with flights from Iceland to US destinations Chicago, Boston, and New York as well as to Winnipeg, planning to add seasonal flights to Orlando this winter.
The trans-Atlantic program is operated in cooperation with Astraeus, using Boeing 757-200 aircraft.
Plans for flights by Iceland Express to destinations in Thailand have also been tested.
