Aug 24, 2011 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo, launching freighter services from Kaunas Airport via Frankfurt to Mumbai from August 27, 2011, is not overly distressed by Finnair Cargo's decision to offer freighter flights, also to Mumbai, from September 16, 2011.
While the two services announced almost simultaneously are both targeting the Finnish market, they are not really identical in the eyes of Lufthansa Cargo, at least.
-Finnair Cargo will primarily be offering a point-to-point freighter service between Helsinki and Mumbai. We are offering a dedicated freighter service from the Finnish and Baltic markets, not only to Mumbai but via transfer in Frankfurt to over 300 Lufthansa Cargo stations worldwide, says Alexander Kohnen, Lufthansa Cargo Director for the Nordic and Baltic countries.
-Mumbai is not really the leading cargo destination in India, but certainly of interest also to exporters in these markets, and with the added potentials of transfers to the Lufthansa Cargo network in Frankfurt we have high expectations for this new freighter service, says Mr Kohnen.
Both carriers will offer Friday departures from Helsinki, with Finnair Cargo using Nordic Global Airlines' MD-11F, and Lufthansa Cargo trucking Finnish exports into Lithuania's Kaunas Airport for uplift by Jade Air Cargo's Boeing 747-400F flight.
