Aug 08, 2011 (newstodate): Although running slightly behind earlier planning, the project for a new freighter service from China to Latvia's Riga Airport is still under preparation.
Behind the project is CargoRix Charters, based at Riga Airport, that is contracting Polet Air Cargo to operate an IL-96-400T freighter from Tianjin, China, to Riga, with some 10 percent of the loads destined for the Baltic market and the remaining 90 percent transferred by truck to Russia and other Eastern markets.
-We are now planning for start-up by late September or early October 2011, with from one to three weekly flights, according to seasonal market demands, says Aigars Dobelnieks, CargoRix Charters commercial director.
-We are also working on setting up a trucking system with three providers, including Schenker Latvia, to provide the smooth transfer of shipments to their final destinations in Russia.
The projected launch of this new ex-China freighter service via a Baltic airport will become the third such venture after Turkish ULS flights into Estonia's Tallinn Airport and Jade Air Cargo flights into Lithuania's Kaunas Airport.
Both the new Polet Air Cargo and ULS flights are aiming at the Russian market, while Jade Air Cargo's flights bring in ex-China shipments for distribution in Central and Eastern Europe.
