Aug 16, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for summer flights from June 14, 2011, between Riga and Almaty, Kazakhstan did not materialize.
The flights were to be offered by the Latvian company CargoRix Charters and operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft from the Latvian ACMI provider SmartLynx, with one weekly rotation till the end of September 2011.
-Unfortunately we ran into problems and had to cancel the arrangement, says Aigars Dobelnieks, CargoRiX Charters commercial director.
Plans are, however, to revive the project in summer 2012.
The flights would have been the first own passenger route by CargoRix Charters that operates several other charter flights from Riga to destinations in Turkey and Egypt with chartered aircraft.
Almaty was earlier an on-line destination at Riga Airport as the Latvian carrier airBaltic launched flights on the route from April 17, 2008, with two weekly rotations.
airBaltic, however, stopped the service already one year later, entering instead a code-share agreement with the Russian carrier Rossiya to transfer passengers to Almaty via St Petersburg.
