Aug 31, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for establishing a new Lithuanian airline, Lithuania Express to be based at Vilnius Airport, are moving forward.
According to Lithuanian media, the mayor of Vilnius, Arturas Zoukas has now come out in support of the project, claiming to be in talks with several potential investors to provide the financial background for realizing the idea of a new national carrier to fill the void after the demise, by early 2009, of flyLAL that went bankrupt.
First news of Lithuania Express broke in 2009 when Thorsteinn Gudnason, Lithuania Express Project manager and himself a member of the group of potential investors in the carrier, said hopes were to launch the carrier already in 2010 with destinations including Berlin, Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
In July 2011 it became known that Lithuania Express received a delegation from "a Chinese company" visiting Lithuania for negotiations with the projected carrier as well as Lithuanian authorities.
According to industry sources, plans now include flights by a Chinese carrier from China, with Lithuanian Express to provide onward connections via Vilnius to European destinations including Keflavik, Dublin, Paris and Barcelona.
On August 1, 2011, Mr Gudnasson told newstodate that no news would be available before September 2011, at the earliest.
Mr Gudnasson today refutes to add further comments to the latest developments, including the efforts by the mayor of Vilnius.
