Aug 11, 2011 (newstodate): Norway's exports of fresh salmon to the global marketplace had its ups and downs during the first half of 2011 - but as to the markets in the Near and Far East the situation was about status quo.
-You might have expected that the Japanese market that is still the single largest importer of Norwegian salmon would be significantly lower in 2011 due to the natural and nuclear disasters. But the market has actually managed to stay clear, says Morten Svendsen, Salmosped managing director.
-We have also seen sound increases in volumes for Israel and Taiwan while volumes for India are still rather insignificant. Norway's exporters of fresh salmon have obviously still to find their way into this otherwise potential market.
-China still maintains its embargo on imports of Norwegian salmon. It is not, however, a total ban as we have managed to get shipments into several Chinese destinations and we are seeing some opening. Still, the situation remains difficult, while there seem to be some doors open for Norwegian salmon transferred into China via other venues including Vietnam where we are seeing some growth probably related to this.
-But generally speaking, volumes of Norwegian salmon by air to markets in these parts of the world are comparable to last years', says Mr Svendsen.
