Aug 29, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for construction of a new green-field international airport at Saratov, in southern Russia, are still on the table after more than two years of futile efforts.
The airport, 50 km from the city, would replace the existing Saratov Tsentralny Airport, and plans aim at establishing the new airport as a multimodal air transportation hub for both passenger and cargo operations at international standards with capability to serve any type of aircraft.
An undisclosed Swiss company has now expressed interest in participating in the project including the construction of a logistics center and a cargo facility.
Together with the regional government, the Swiss company is reportedly settling the details of the financing program to support the construction works.
Originally slated to start construction in time for completion of its first phase by the end of 2011 already, and to be fully commissioned by 2014, plans are now to have the airport fully developed by 2025 with joint state-regional and private investments.
The airport will be designed to the annual capacity of handling 1.3 mio passengers and 3,900 tonnes of cargo.
The current airport at Saratov now serves 340,000 passengers and handles about 1,000 tonnes of cargo.
