Aug 01, 2011 (newstodate): First heard of in 2009 with plans to launch operations from Vilnius by early 2010, the airline project Lithuanian Express is still alive.
In July it became known that Lithuanian Express was receiving a delegation from a Chinese company visiting Lithuania for negotiations with the projected carrier as well as Lithuanian authorities.
According to industry sources, plans include flights from China via Lithuania to European airports including Keflavik, Dublin, Paris and Barcelona.
A spokesman for the airline project, headed by Icelandic national Thorsteinn Gudnason, however says no imminent moves are to be expected.
-We will not be in a position to reveal any information before at least by September 2011, he says.
But is is also known that Estonia is keen to see Vilnius Airport developing its transfer traffic volumes to overcome the limitations on air traffic from the limited size of its home market.
So far the traffic at the airport is almost exclusively generated as European point-to-point traffic with regional aircraft, but traffic volumes are rising strongly after having come to a near-stop when the national carrier flyLAL folded its wings by early 2009.
