Aug 30, 2011 (newstodate): The Romanian low-cost carrier Blue Air has emerged as a member of a group to construct a new airport at Bucharest - the first new Romanian airport to be built for 20 years.
The carrier, in the air since December 2004, belongs to a group of companies, Romstrade, owned by a private entrepreneur and millionaire.
Blue air is currently based at Bucharest Baneasa Airport that also serves other LCCs including WIZZ Air and Germanwings.
Bucharest Baneasa Airport is, however, designated to serve only business aircraft from 2013, forcing its existing airline operators to move to Bucharest Otopeni Henri Coanda Airport.
Blue Air will instead prefer a move to a new dedicated privately-owned low-cost airline airport planned at the southern outskirts of Bucharest and slated to open for business within two years.
The new airport will be designed to handling of Airbus A320/Boeing 737 types of aircraft.
