Aug 17, 2011 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo is likely to see strong competition as Lufthansa Cargo launches its new freighter service from Kaunas, Lithuania, on August 27, 2011.
The new weekly Boeing 747-400F service via Frankfurt is fed by an exclusive road feeder service from Helsinki Vantaa Airport to Kaunas Airport via Estonia and Latvia, and its schedule with truck departure from Helsinki on Fridays and arrival in Bombay, India, by early Sunday will allow for full utilization of weekly workdays.
India is currently not served with freighters by Finnair Cargo but is in the future plans by Nordic Global Airline now operating Finnair Cargo's freighter route network.
Besides the continuing flight from Frankfurt to Bombay, the service will also provide access during the weekend to more than 300 Lufthansa Cargo stations worldwide via transfer at Frankfurt Airport.
Lufthansa Cargo is Finnair Cargo's strongest competitor in the Finnish airfreight market, and reducing lead-times through access to maindeck capacity from Kaunas Airport the company is expected to grow its position in Finland
