Aug 19, 2011 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo and Finnair Cargo are probably in for a close race with new freighter services to India, announced on August 17 and 18, respectively.
-It is indeed very difficult to forecast what will happen. The world is marked by deep economic crisis, and exports from Finland have ceased to grow in volumes, says Juha Isohanni, Waco Finland managing director.
-India is indeed an important market for Finnish exporters, and Finnair Cargo has been quite successful with their passengers flights to India carrying belly cargo. Also, Finnair Cargo sees its market not only in Finland, but in Sweden, Norway and other European countries as well.
-But the competition will be close, and if services prove to be comparable, only one parameter - rates - will separate winner and loser.
-Also the situation for the two airlines is different. Finnair Cargo has only few freighters in service, increasing the demand for profitability of each route separately. Lufthansa Cargo has many more freighters, also including partners' aircraft, and thus more flexibility in their system.
-Anyway, with the limited information we have so far the outcome of the new situation is difficult to foresee. The almost simultaneous launch of the two services came as a surprise to us - and probably also to the two competitors, says Mr Isohanni.
