Aug 02, 2011 (newstodate): Finland's competition authorities have now approved the acquisition of Finnish Commuter Airlines by Flybe Nordic AB, jointly owned by Flybe and Finnair.
The joint vision of the two owners of Flybe Nordic is to build the carrier into a leading regional airline in the Nordic and Baltic markets, aiming at setting up traffic in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia and Latvia, in addition to the Finnish market.
No details of the future aircraft fleet or route network of Flybe Nordic have yet been provided, but expectations are that operations will be launched by the start of the coming winter schedule.
The new project will probably compete with the plans by the new Ukrainean owner of Cimber Sterling to move towards a merger or another form of close cooperation between Cimber Sterling and Skyways, as well as with other carriers that may be targeted for acquisition by Mansvell - which might include also a share in the Latvian carrier airBaltic.
