Aug 18, 2011 (newstodate): The Finnish exporters will certainly welcome two fresh alternatives for air transport of shipments to India.
With Lufthansa Cargo offering RFS from Helsinki to a new freighter service from Lithuania's Kaunas Airport targeting Mumbai, India, from August 27, 2011, with Finnair Cargo/Nordic Global Airlines following suit with direct flights from Helsinki to Mumbai from September 16, 2011, the market has suddenly got a choice between two alternatives.
-The Indian market is very important to Finnish exporters, and we welcome this development, says Timo Juntunen, Agility Finland Export Manager.
-The news is really quite fresh so we have not yet had time to study details. One question popping up is whether Finnair Cargo can offer transfers to other Indian destinations, because Mumbai is certainly not the only Indian destination of importance to us. No information on this has been provided in the first release out this morning.
-With both services leaving on Friday, with shipments ready for hand-out on Monday morning in Mumbai, the race between the two alternatives will be quite close. This will undoubtedly lead to competition over rates, which is also a thing to be welcomed.
-Generally speaking, Finnish forwarders and exporters are quite loyal to the national carrier, but of course efficiency of services and levels of rates will weigh in as well.
-The nose-loading capacity by the Lufthansa Cargo alternative will maybe also play a role in the competition as it will allow easy air transport of shipments with out-size dimensions.
-The news about two new Indian freighter options are indeed welcome, and we are keen to follow how this will develop as more details are offered and practice shows, says Mr Juntunen.
