Aug 08, 2011 (newstodate): Bulgaria's Varna Airport is looking forward to an extremely quiet winter season.
The airport is actually to be closed down for operations from October 15, 2011, till the end of February 2012 to allow for rehabilitation by German construction company Max Boegl Bauunternehmung of its 2,500m runway.
During the winter period, all flights will be re-directed instead to Bourgas Airport.
Among the operators at Varna Airport are Austrian, Malev, S7 Airlines, WIZZ Air and Bulgaria Air.
In 2008, Fraport together with its partner, the Bulgarian company BM Star, won the concession to manage Bourgas and Varna Airports for 35 years after a prolonged and heated dispute over an earlier tender that was won by Denmark's Copenhagen Airport that eventually pulled out.
