Aug 15, 2011 (newstodate): As the Lithuanian aviation market is recovering at a fast pace, picking easy gains by carriers from neighboring markets will be a thing of the past.
After the start of 2009, with flyLAL's bankruptcy, Vilnius Airport was heavily under-served with air traffic, leading both Estonian Air and Latvia's airBaltic to set up traffic with flights to own hubs and other direct services from Vilnius to European destinations.
Now Estonian Air is to scrap its flights from Vilnius to Amsterdam, launched in February 2010, and Stockholm from later in 2010.
At the peak in 2010, Estonian Air operated up to four direct flights from Vilnius Airport.
Earlier operating up to 13 destinations with direct flights from Vilnius, Latvia's airBaltic largely retreated from the Lithuanian market in the latter part of 2010 after the build-up of low-cost and scheduled traffic at Vilnius Airport.
