Aug 11, 2011 (newstodate): The UAE low-cost carrier Air Arabia, based in Sharjah, launched flights to Tuzla, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, from July 4, 2011.
That, however, proved to be no success.
After only a few flights with Airbus A320 aircraft the service has now been suspended due to low demand in the market.
The carrier had planned for a total of 31 rotations during the summer season, and the airport had placed great hopes on the service as a door-opener to attracting new traffic to the airport.
Once the largest military air force base in the former Yugoslavia, Tuzla International was placed under UN control in 1992, becoming from 1996 the main hub for the SFOR peacekeeping forces.
In 1998, Tuzla International Airport was turned into a commercial airport, opening October 10, 1998, as a joint civilian and military airport, but so far into 2011 the airport has seen only 1,217 passengers.
After the pull-out by Air Arabia, the airport is left with only seasonal traffic to Antalya, Turkey, by Sky Airlines.
