Aug 05, 2011 (newstodate): In contrast to airfreight between Scandinavia and the USA, hit by waning demand, over-capacity and rock-bottom rates, Canada stands out favorably.
Air Canada launched its five-times weekly service between Toronto and Copenhagen from June 25, 2010, using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft and served in the Danish market by Heavy-Weight Denmark Aps as cargo GSA.
-We are seeing a positive trend in export shipments from Denmark and despite a generally slack season during the summer, cargo volumes have been on the rise even in June and July while sliding somewhat in the last week of July and the first week of August due to the vacation period, says Nicolai Mariegaard, Heavy-Weight Denmark general manager.
-As to rates, we are seeing pressure in the market as everyone else, but rates to Canada are still quite good and at least about twice the level of rates to the USA.
-Shipments on Air Canada from Denmark include pharmaceuticals as well as goods from a wide range of exporters including Danfoss, B&O and other hi-end manufacturers.
-On the import side, we saw some 100 tonnes of shipments from Canada in July, and while this volume varies over time the situation is largely stable. So with export volumes steadily rising, we are quite satisfied with the situation, says Mr Mariegaard.
During this summer schedule, Air Canada operates the route with daily flights.
