Jul 25, 2011 (newstodate): Finnair has announced the addition of a new Chinese destination to its growing Asian route map.
New to come from May 9, 2012 is Chongqing, one of China's largest cities when counting the population in the municipality as well the large adjoining administrative areas together.
With the opening of the route to be served initially with four weekly Airbus A340 flights, Finnair will become the first European airline to offer direct flights to Chongqing.
This will also add significant cargo loads on Finnair's Chinese traffic.
Chongqing Airport Group predicts that air cargo will reach about 220,000 tonnes in 2011, including 55,000 tonnes of locally-made laptop PCs.
Finnair already serves Chinese destinations Beijing and Shanghai, as well as Hong Kong, with direct flights, while services from Helsinki to Guangzhou from September 2, 2005, were discontinued in 2009 due to low demand during the economic recession from 2008.
