Jul 29, 2011 (newstodate): The gate has now been opened for a new development at Latvia's Riga Airport.
The EU Commission has given its green light for the EU Cohesion Fund to support Latvia's application for Development of Infrastructure at Riga International Airport.
The plan includes resurfacing of the airport's runway, a new ILS system, development of the taxiway system to enhance the optimization of the runway capacity, reconstruction of the apron are, and construction of two new de-icing platforms.
With the runway projects completed, the airport's capacity will increase from the current handling of 49 to 52 aircraft per hour.
Project design and development will be completed before the end of this year, while the physical construction works will take place during 2012-13.
