Jun 17, 2011 (newstodate): St Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport may well become the future main gateway to the Baltic region, in direct competition to the ambitions of airports like Helsinki, Copenhagen or even Riga.
The airport has entered an agreement with the Russian carrier Transaero to work jointly for positioning the airport as a major transfer hub in the Baltic region for air traffic between Europe, Russia, the Far East and the USA.
A focus will initially be on the air traffic streams from South East Asia to Europe and the USA, and under the agreement Transaero has undertaken to launch at least two new international routes from St Petersburg.
Transaero will also progressively increase the number of aircraft based at the airport and dedicated to serving this growing traffic, as well as constructing a new hangar at the airport for aircraft maintenance.
St Petersburg Pulkovo airport is already Russia's 4th largest airport, only surpassed by the three airport serving Moscow, serving some 8.5 mio passengers in 2010.
In 2010, Fraport AG won the right to manage St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport for 30 years.
