Jun 23, 2011 (newstodate): Sweden's Malmo Airport, operated by Swedavia, is seeing a rather stable air cargo performance in 2011.
-Seen even over a 10-year period, we have actually little growth in volumes, and during this year's first six months cargo volumes have remained stable as well, says Peter Weinhandl, Malmo Airport manager.
-The cargo volumes are generated primarily by AirBridgeCargo that operates a weekly Boeing 747-400 freighter from Malmo Airport to Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow since April 2010, connecting to onward flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Tokyo. Another important regular operator at Malmo Airport is UPS that operates a route between Liege and Malmo Sturup Airport from where traffic is fed into the Danish as well as the Norwegian market by smaller freighter aircraft.
-In the master plan for the development of Malmo Airport is the construction of a new cargo terminal, but I do not expect this project to be activated within the next 18 months, at least.
-UPS is handling its own cargo shipments at its own warehouse at the Malmo Airport, while Menzies provides cargo handling for other parties, says Mr Weinhandl.
Seen over the last few years, cargo volumes at Malmo Airport have vacillated between 35,000 and up to 60,000 tonnes of cargo.
