Jun 24, 2011 (newstodate): While passenger traffic has been declining at Slovakia's Bratislava Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport, the air cargo business has been growing at a fast pace since the end of 2008.
In 2010, the airport thus generated a total of 17,77 tonnes of cargo and mail, an increase by 49 percent, y-o-y, after growing also 71 percent, y-o-y, to 11,903 tonnes in 2009.
Compared to that, cargo volumes in 2008 were only 6.961 tonnes, and in 2007 a mere 1,969 tonnes.
Main driver behind the positive development in air cargo at the airport is DHL Express that signed a contract with Bratislava Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport for operating regular flights five days a week between Bratislava and Leipzig, the European hub for DHL Express.
Under the contract, DHL Express moved its former hub from Vienna to Bratislava.
