Jun 15, 2011 (newstodate): History never repeats itself, it's said.
And yet SAS Cargo's Spirit Air Cargo Handling is now set to move into Terminal North, directly accessing Copenhagen Airport's passenger aircraft apron, for a second time- albeit at half the original price!
The move from the current facilities at the airport's eastern cargo area will take place after the exact demarcation line separating airside/landside has been determined, and some upgrading of systems to manage ETV and EPS has been completed.
Spirit will rent the entire ground floor and upper level of the terminal that was inaugurated in 2004 but experienced sustained teething troubles with managing the hi-tech systems and equipment installed.
After Spirit lost many major customers, notably Korean air Cargo from 2005 and Singapore Airlines Cargo from 2009, the company moved its entire handling operations to the ex-Novia terminal on the eastern premises of the airport in summer 2009.
SAS Cargo is now seeing volumes rising beyond the capacity of the terminal, and rather than investing in an expansion, the company was tempted by Copenhagen Airport to return operations to the Terminal North that has proved to be impossible to rent for other purposes.
Industry sources claim that Copenhagen Airport has bolstered its invitation by offering a rent almost 50 percent below earlier levels.
