Jun 30, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for developing Finland's Vaasa Airport into a new cargo hub seem to be losing steam.
Originally, visions were that a new cargo apron area and two multi-functional cargo terminals would be in place by 2012 to serve the Vaasa region with Finland's largest energy cluster in the Nordic region, with companies including Wacon, ABB, and VEO relying heavily on access to ports, railways - and also air cargo facilities.
-Unfortunately we cannot announce any progress along these lines, and no major marketing efforts have been invested in the project lately, Riitta Bjorkenheim, Vaasa Region Development Company ltd Development Manager, flight logistics.
-Companies in the region definitely need new and better logistics, but the emphasis now sees to be more on the side of multi-modal solutions comprising both sea, rail, road and air transportation options. Thus we are now looking into the direction of Gothenburg, Sweden, that offers all three modes of transportation within an integrated environment, says Ms Bjorkenheim.
