Jun 30, 2011 (newstodate): Lithuania's Kaunas Airport is encouraged by Lufthansa Cargo's new freighter operation to Frankfurt and onwards to Bombay, India.
-We had long hoped for the introduction of export freighter services to complement the import freighter service from Shanghai to Kaunas, and we are keen to see success for Lufthansa Cargo's initiative, says Arijandas Sliupas, Kaunas Airport general director.
-We are now entering the summer season which means a seasonal decrease in cargo volumes, and we are noticing a general slow-down in ex-China shipments, so I do not expect a major increase in the total cargo volumes this side of summer. The full effect from these freighter services will probably show only as the cargo business picks up again from the autumn.
-But in any case, the new Lufthansa Cargo freighter service is most welcome news to Kaunas Airport's efforts to secure its position as a major cargo hub in the Baltic region, says Mr Sliupas.
Effective from June 18, 2011, Lufthansa Cargo launched its weekly service by Jade Air Cargo from Kaunas Airport to Frankfurt, extending to Bombay, India, by taking over the incoming Boeing 747-400 freighter operating from Shanghai to Kaunas Airport with ex-China shipments for distribution by road to a range of European destinations
