Jun 14, 2011 (newstodate): Lithuania's Civil Aviation Administration has lifted Vilnius Airport's runway from CAT I to CAT II, allowing the airport to operate air traffic under adverse weather conditions.
The new certification follows after one year of testing and auditing after the implementation of a new instrument landing system and distance measuring equipment, ILS and DME.
After a tender, Siemens UAB was awarded a contract for the reconstruction of signal lights at the airport and has supplemented the current signaling system with 250 additional approach and landing area lights, while changes have also been made to the provision of meteorological information.
With the new certification, the airport will be able to halve the number of down-time at the airport from earlier 14 to seven days per year, allowing it to play the role of alternate airport to other airports in the Baltic region.
