Jun 07, 2011 (newstodate): On May 2011, Finnair Cargo rounded off the first year of operating its own freighter services.
The company launched the MD-11F freighter business on May 12, 2010, with a single aircraft operating two weekly rotations between Helsinki and Hong Kong, and two weekly rotations between Helsinki and Seoul.
In May 2011, the freighter schedule had grown to four weekly rotations between Helsinki and Kong Kong, two weekly rotations between Helsinki and Seoul, two weekly rotations between Helsinki and New York, and two weekly rotations between Helsinki and Frankfurt.
Still, the latest statistics from Finnair covering May 2011 show that volumes on the now two freighters grew by only 6.3 percent, y-o-y, to 1,310 tonnes.
The meager development is, however, marked by the deep impact from waning Japanese airfreight and the immediate effects on the traffic on other routes that mainly serve as feeder lines for the Asian business via Helsinki.
Anyhow, Finnair Cargo's freighters transported a total of 10,273 tonnes of cargo during January-May 2011, while volumes on all-cargo flights in 2010 totaled 18,180 tonnes.
