Jun 07, 2011 (newstodate): Breaking a long history of monthly increases in cargo volumes, Finnair Cargo reports negative growth in volumes in May 2011.
A total of 10,671 tonnes of cargo was carrier in May, down 4.5 percent, y-o-y.
The main driver of Finnair Cargo, the Asian traffic was hit by the sustained shortfall of business in Japan after the triple disasters, so volumes on Finnair's Asian belly cargo dropped by 4.6 percent, y-o-y, to 6,565 tonnes.
The decline in Japanese traffic took a similar toll on the carrier's other route segments that all performed negatively, such as North America, down 8.1 percent and Europe minus 8.0 percent.
The Asian load cargo factor also dropped by 11.8 percentage-points, while the North American load factor was down 8.3 percentage-points.
Finnair Cargo's freighters lifted at total of 1,310 tonnes, up 6.3 percent on May 2010 when the freighter program was initiated.
During this year's first five months, Finnair has carried a total of 56,240 tonnes, up 29.6 percent, y-o-y, with loads on the Asian traffic, 31,910 tonnes, increasing 9.7 percent, y-o-y..
