Jun 06, 2011 (newstodate): For foreign carriers, Finland is a difficult airfreight market to penetrate.
-Finland is indeed a most demanding market, strongly dominated by its national carrier, Finnair, that carries more than 50 percent of the air cargo volumes, says Alexander Kohnen, Lufthansa Cargo Director for the Nordic and Baltic countries.
-Finnair Cargo's strong position in the market is bolstered by the country's freight forwarders that are extremely loyal to the national carrier. Besides, Finnair has been expanding its aircraft fleet very aggressively, throwing much cargo capacity into the market, which of course has a strong bearing on rates and competition.
-Still, Lufthansa Cargo has managed to position itself as #2 in the Finnish airfreight market with about 12 percent in market share, follow by KLM, SAS and Cargolux.
-In our view, Finland's airfreight market is rather stable and depending on its main exporting companies, where notably Nokia has long since ceased its large-scale exports by air of cell phones that was earlier a key driver in the industry, says Mr Kohnen.
