Jun 23, 2011 (newstodate): Copenhagen is to become the first Scandinavian foothold for Dubai-based Emirates - but most probably not the only one.
Effective from August 1, 2011, Emirates is launching a daily Airbus A330-200 flight between Dubai and Copenhagen Airport, increasing to daily Boeing 777-300 services from February 2012.
-Denmark is our first Scandinavian destination, and we have high hopes for the development of this route that will also attract business in the southern part of Sweden, says Richard Vaughan, Emirates Divisional Snr VP Commercial Operations Worldwide.
-Emirates will now monitor the response in these markets and it is our policy to consolidate the first route in a new market before adding more destinations, but it is certainly not unlikely that services to other Scandinavian destinations, such as Stockholm may be added at a later stage, says Mr Vaughan.
The airfreight industry is also to benefit from the new direct connection between Denmark and Dubai, with weekly cargo uplift capacity to grow from 105 tonnes per week to 140 by February 2012, when the larger Boeing 777-300 is replacing the initial Airbus A330-200 services as part of Emirates' decision to phase out entirely this aircraft type from its fleet.
