Jun 29, 2011 (newstodate): The UAE low-cost carrier Air Arabia, based in Sharjah, will start operations between Tuzla, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Dubai from July 4, 2011, with a program comprising 31 rotations till October 24, 2011.
Even if the new service is thus only seasonal, it raises hopes at Tuzla Airport to see more traffic coming to town, and the airport has placed orders for acquisition of new handling equipment to serve the traffic.
Once the largest military air force base in the former Yugoslavia, Tuzla International was placed under UN control in 1992, becoming from 1996 the main hub for the SFOR peacekeeping forces.
In 1998, Tuzla International Airport was turned into a commercial airport, opening October 10, 1998, as a joint civilian and military airport.
As the airport has found it hard to attract attention from commercial carriers, plans are now fomenting for focusing on its future potential role as a cargo airport in the Balkan region.
Investors from the United Arab Emirates have reportedly shown interest in the cargo project that has also attracted the attention of Turkish Airlines.
