Jun 17, 2011 (newstodate): Consolidation in Russia's airline industry has made huge progress in the later years, following on a first period of under-financed and badly managed airline ventures during the 90'ies.
Today Russia has 168 commercial airlines, which is considered an optimum by the country's ministry of transportation.
In 2006 there was around 200 commercial airlines in Russia, and in 2008 the number had been reduced to 178.
In 2008 the top-five Russian airlines carried 52 percent of all passengers, and in 2011 estimates are that 90 percent of all Russian passengers are carried by 20 airlines.
