Jun 10, 2011 (newstodate): Lithuania's Vilnius Airport saw moderate growth in its cargo volumes in May.
A total of 499 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport, an increase over 2010 by eight percent.
In May 2010, the single largest air cargo carrier at Vilnius Airport was still the Latvian airline airBaltic that has since pullet our from most of its routes from Lithuania, focusing instead on carrying passengers into its hub in neighboring Riga Airport.
In May 2010, airBaltic thus accounted for 134 tonnes of cargo, which dropped to 75 tonnes in May 2011, still enough to secure the #2 position after Aviavilsa, operating for DHL, that transported 157 tonnes in May 2011 against 130 tonnes in May 2010.
#3 in both May 2010 and May 2011 was Lufthansa Cargo with 59 and 70 tonnes, respectively.
During January-May 2011, Vilnius Airport saw a total of 2,417 tonnes of cargo against 2,052 tonnes in the same period in 2010 - an increase by 17.8 percent.
