May 24, 2011 (newstodate): The Serb government has drawn up a plan to invest in the development of 16 airports across the country.
Among these is a former air force base, Uzice-Ponikve Airport that served as a domestic airport during the 90'ies before being destroyed at the end of decade during the civil wars in the region.
Before the airport can start reconstruction, the area must be cleared of mines, but after donor funds have now been granted, sweeping of the area will start within this autumn.
Following that, plans are on the table for construction by the second half of 2012 of a new passenger terminal and other pertinent infrastructure.
This, however, requires financial resources that are still not at hand.
Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has already invested in the project that aims at making Uzice-Ponikve Airport a major cargo hub in western Serbia.
