May 05, 2011 (newstodate): Russia's IL-76 ramp-loading freighter remains the undisputed leader in crucial niches of the air cargo industry.
The IL-76 delivers about 80 percent of all airfreight lifted into disaster zones during natural or humanitarian crisis, and in the case of the on-going campaign in Afghanistan, the IL-76 freighters carry some 40 percent of all airfreight shipments in support of the operations.
Over the years, a total of 960 IL-76 aircraft have been built but due to noise regulations implemented by ICAO in 2002, the commercial operation of the IL-76TD in Western Europe, North America, Australia and Japan was prohibited.
The aircraft has, however regained life after the development of the new IL-76TD-90VD freighter cleared to operate globally after the aircraft type was awarded an ICAO Chapter 4 noise certificate.
