May 12, 2011 (newstodate): Tension around the opening of Stepanakert Airport in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region seems to be easing.
The first flight from the region to Armenia's capital Yerevan by the regional government's airline, Artsakh Air was slated for May 12, 2001, and Azerbaijan had threatened to take action against the aircraft that would have carried a delegation headed by the region's top-brass.
Now the region's auhorities have decided to delay the opening of the airport referring to needs for more work on the runway that must be further expanded to allow for traffic by larger aircraft.
The airport has been inactive for more than 20 years, but it has been under recontruction for a few years with used equipment from the airports of Stepanavan and Gyumri, Armenia.
